Course Description

What if a great story could turn math into an adventure? In Storybook Math, students discover, explore, and build their mathematical thinking one story at a time! Storybook Math is a fun, engaging supplemental math class for Grades 1–2 that uses MathStart storybooks to bring important math concepts to life. Through stories and interactive investigations, students will explore number sense, addition and subtraction, measurement, geometry, fractions, data, probability, and problem-solving. Each class begins with a story that introduces a mathematical idea or problem. Students will then participate in interactive discussions, visual math challenges, games, puzzles, and simple hands-on investigations. Children may occasionally use everyday items such as LEGO bricks, toys, coins, paper, or other small objects to model their thinking—no special math manipulatives are required. Students will strengthen foundational math skills while developing the ability to think mathematically, explain their reasoning, solve problems, make predictions, and recognize math in everyday life. Most importantly, students will build confidence and curiosity as they discover that math isn't just something to calculate—it's something to explore! Homework/Time Commitment: Students may need to print a worksheet or gather a few simple household items for an upcoming activity. Families will receive advance notice of anything needed for class. Supply List for Students: Pencil, paper/notebook, crayons or colored pencils, and 10–20 small household objects for math activities. Occasionally needed: Scissors, glue, ruler, dice, playing cards, string/yarn, and a paper plate. Optional: LEGO bricks or building blocks.
