Inside Out & Back Again 5th-7th
Read and discuss this Newbery Honor Book told in verse and inspired by the author's own childhood.
Course Description
If you are a 5th-7th grader and love to read, discuss and explore literature, then this is the book club for you! In this course, we will read Inside Out & Back Again by Thanhha Lai. Book Synopsis: Inspired by the author's childhood experience as a refugee—fleeing Vietnam after the Fall of Saigon and immigrating to Alabama—this coming-of-age debut novel told in verse has been celebrated for its touching child's-eye view of family and immigration. Hà has only ever known Saigon: the thrills of its markets, the joy of its traditions, and the warmth of her friends close by. But now the Vietnam War has reached her home. Hà and her family are forced to flee as Saigon falls, and they board a ship headed toward hope—toward America. Students will each be given a specific role which will guide the weekly discussion in response to what they have read. You may talk about events and characters in the book, the author's craft, or personal experiences related to the story. Literature circles provide a way for students to engage in critical thinking and reflection as they read, discuss, and respond to books. NOTE: This course will require the student to have a copy of the book and to complete the assigned reading each week and come prepared to each session ready for discussion and fulfilling his/her assigned role within the group.
